Age Spots

Age spots are dark spots that often form on the hands, face, or shoulders. They are common in older adults but they can also affect younger people as well. They are caused by melanin that is concentrated at the base of the epidermis (your top layer of skin). Ultraviolet light increases the production of melanin. So sunlight and indoor tanning can cause age spots. Aging and genetic factors can also cause age spots. And some drugs and chemicals can cause your skin to be more sensitive to sun, increasing the likelyhood of age spots.

Age Spots on Hands

People who have taken great care to avoid sun on their face are often shocked as they age and begin to see age spots appearing on their hands. These age spots frequently appear in conjunction with the veins becoming more visible in the hands as well. The combination of these two conditions can make your hands appear years older. By using laser to remove the age spots and hand rejuvenation to restore lost volume to the hands we can restore your hands to a more youthful appearance.

Age Spots on Face

Age spots on the face, also called liver spots and solar lentigines, may be caused by the same factors that cause them on the hands. Dark patches of skin on the face similar to age spots may also accompany pregnancy in a condition referred to by the names Melasma, Chloasma faciei, or “Mask of Pregnancy”. The condition occurs when the body overproduces melanin causing hyperpigmentation as a reaction to hormonrs. Women using contraceptives also sometimes develop the condition.

Age Spot Removal

Removal of age spots is accomplished by destroying the melanocytes in the base of the epidermis layer. Treatments such as Laser Skin Resurfacing, Chemical Peels, and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) can be used alone or in combination therapy depending upon your unique situation. Most patients will require several treatments. You can expect the age spots to fade some after each treatment.
