INJECTABLE FILLERS
RESTYLANE® and JUVEDERM™
Restore laugh lines, frown lines and lip volume with Restylane
Restylane is a dermal filler made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid ~ a natural substance that already exists in the human body. It is a carbohydrate (sugar) rather than a protein therefore it does not require skin testing prior to treatment. Restylane is ideal for correction of laugh lines and frown lines around the mouth and is the filler that a PBS physician often uses to safely and naturally restore or enhance the lips. Results are immediate and last approximately six months.
How should I prepare before Restylane treatment?
We recommend that you avoid use of aspirin, ibuprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Ginko Biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, multivitamins, vitamin A, vitamin E, or any other blood thinning medication for at least 10 days prior to treatment and for 24 hours after treatment. This will help to prevent bruising and bleeding. Please consult your primary care physician before discontinuing use of any prescription medication. We also ask that you remove any make-up in the treatment area prior to your appointment.
What should I expect during my treatment?
You will arrive to the office approximately one hour prior to the time of your injection. A topical anesthetic agent will be applied to the skin at the site of injection to help diminish any discomfort you may experience. If you are receiving lip enhancement treatment, a PBS physician will also perform a dental block to provide anesthesia to the sensitive lip area. Every effort will be made to minimize your discomfort.
Are there any contraindications to treatment with Restylane?
- Restylane contains a small amount of gram positive bacterial protein. It is made from streptococcus species of bacteria. A client with a history of allergy to such material can not undergo Restylane injection.
- We do not perform treatment on pregnant of breastfeeding females.
- Caution is advised in receiving Restylane treatment if you have a history of keloid scar formation. Please inform the PBS staff if you have ever developed a hypertrophic keloid scar after any skin injury or injection.
- We can not inject Restylane into any area that has cysts, rashes, pimples, hives or infection. Injection would need to be rescheduled once the skin problem has resolved.
- Restylane should be used with caution in patients on immunosuppressive therapy. This includes long term oral steroid use.
- Patients on blood thinners such as Plavix and Coumadin should be treated cautiously due to increased risk of bleeding and bruising with injection.
How can I maximize the longevity of my treatment with Restylane?
There are various factors that influence longevity of correction: the specific areas treated, age, amount of sun exposure (remember heat breaks this Restylane down faster), ongoing muscle movement (clients with Botox in the same area may have a longer result) and weight loss. Dehydration should be avoided as Restylane requires water to stay plump.
When can I return for further treatment?
An aesthetic enhancement can be performed at any time. We recommend enhancing your treatment at five month intervals to maintain your treatment result.
What can I expect after Restylane treatment?
You will experience minor swelling in the area that will last 2-3 days. As with any injection, there is always risk of bruising and swelling. We recommend that you complete your treatment at least one week prior to any major event in order to ensure that any potential swelling or bruising may resolve. If you are receiving treatment of your lips, we recommend that you not return to work the day of treatment due to the more pronounced swelling that may occur. Most patients feel comfortable returning to regular activities after treatment of all other skin regions.
