A laser is used with Laser Skin Resurfacing to treat areas of wrinkled or damaged skin. Most times, this treatment is done to reduce fine lines around the mouth and eyes. It can be also useful in treating areas or uneven pigmentation or facial scars. Laser treatments can be used on the entire face or just specific regions.

Like other skin treatments, the goal is to remove layers of skin so that new skin will fill the crevices and wrinkles. Before lasers, the only medical treatment option were microdermabrasion and chemical peels. The drawback of these procedures is that they don't use the light generated by lasers and can only remove a very thin layer of the skin. Lasers can treat much deeper layers of the skin.

Are there certain times that Laser Skin Resurfacing is not appropriate?

Laser skin resurfacing may not be the best option for people with black skin, suntans, or olive complexions. Also, it may not be useful with people who are prone to scars, disorders of the skin, or for those on certain types of medications.

What can I expect after a Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment?

One can expect some discomfort and light swelling after a treatment. We recommend using an ice pack after a treatment and sometimes the physician will prescribe a mild medication. You may also experience a crusted, red appearance for up to 10 days or more.

What are the Risks and Complications?

The complications with Laser Skin Resurfacing are rare. If they occur, they can include burning, scarring or some skin discoloration. In the rarest of cases, infections or viruses may occur.

Are the improvements from Laser Skin Resurfacing permanent?

Unfortunately, no. Skin imperfections, wrinkles, or discoloration of the skin may reappear over your lifetime.
